Sunn O))). Gothic Theatre. 05.02.16

Sunn O))). Gothic Theatre. 05.02.16 Feeling alone in a room full of people is common among those with certain social conditions, but it’s not something usually associated with live music. Even when attending a concert solo, there is an obvious connection between performer and spectator. People don’t go to shows alone unless that connection exists. Last night was an exception… Read more →

Maryland Deathfest XIII. Baltimore. May 2015

Maryland Deathfest XIII. Baltimore. May 2015 It’s been awhile since I’ve had a guest post. It’s also been awhile since I’ve covered a lot of extreme music. So I asked Genji to share his thoughts on MDF XIII. Reading his trip report really makes me wish I could’ve made it out. Oh well, it sounds like it just keeps getting better,… Read more →

Thou. Mutiny Information Cafe. 04.13.14

It was a Sunday night and I was standing on a chair in a bookstore. A quick scan through the shelves below me provided my bearings as somewhere between the ‘humor’ and ‘teen’ section – about mid-store. I browsed through Dr. Denis Leary’s “Why We Suck” before discarding it in favor of The Onion’s “Our Dumb World”. When I periodically… Read more →

Deafheaven / SubRosa. Marquis Theater. 02.16.14

Some shows just scream to be written about. By the end of the night, the narrative already exists. When I sit down in front of the computer the next day, it’s just a matter of transcribing what the artist(s) have already delivered in the form of their performance. My best reviews are not really reviews at all, they are simply the written account of what went down inside a particular venue on a particular night. I am in no way a music expert. I am not a musician, so how can I be expected to critique what is happening on the stage? I cannot. That’s not what I do. I would be a fraud if I tried. What I do, or at least what I try to do, is document the feeling of being at the show. The primary reason I do this might surprise some of you, but I assure you it is the truth — I do this so I can go back and experience these performances over and over again. The only reason I don’t just record my thoughts in a private diary is that I think others might benefit from the words I write. Maybe they weren’t able to make the show and they want to know what it was like to be there. Maybe they were there and want to compare their experience with someone else’s. Maybe they are going to attend the show in another city and want to know what to expect. I believe these are all valid reasons to share my thoughts with those who are receptive. Read more →

Winter Rite Tour. Marquis Theater. 02.06.13

Last night was a perfect reminder as to why I decided to cut back on shows this year.  There I was at the Marquis Theater, spitting distance from Norwegian metal-gods Enslaved, before the clock struck midnight, and I was yawning.  “As Fire (and a sparse, violent circle pit)  Swept Clean the Earth”, my mind was losing a battle with my body.… Read more →

Witch Mountain. Larimer Lounge. 06.20.12

Standing among the few who ventured out to Larimer Lounge on a Wednesday night, I couldn’t help but reflect on the confession of NPR intern Emily White, and (even more so) the incredibly thought provoking response from David Lowery. While the opening acts were thrashing away, threatening to exceed ‘safe’ decibel levels, and mashing vocal chords to pulp, I couldn’t… Read more →
